Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s foundation, Archewell, has released its annual report revealing that the organisation donated $1.2m (£950,000) to several charities this year. The foundation’s projects varied from helping Afghan women in the United States to reducing misinformation. The Halo Trust, a mine-clearing charity supported by Princess Diana, also received a donation of $100,000 from Archewell. Tax documents for 2022 revealed that the foundation donated $1.2m at the same level as the previous year. Archewell now holds over $11m in funds.

The financial report sheds some light on the couple’s work in the United States after stepping down from official royal duties in the UK. Archewell was created when Prince Harry and Meghan moved to the US and has been operating for three full years. It works in partnership with the couple’s production arms, and this year’s donations were in line with the previous year.

Projects funded by Archewell Foundation included $200,000 for a “gender justice” project, $125,000 for a civil-rights charity, and $100,000 for a technology-responsibility project. Prince Harry and Meghan appeared in a promotional video supporting some of the causes and campaigns. Unaudited figures for the current year’s tax return show a similar donation of $1.2m being made. This included supporting a project aimed at settling Afghan women in local US communities and a non-profit project tackling misinformation in parts of the US that lost their local newspapers.

Although Archewell started with an income of $13m, it raised a further $7m in the following two years. Between 2021 and 2023, it issued grants of $5.4m. The tax returns showed that Prince Harry and Meghan receive no income from the charity. However, the foundation has an annual staff salary bill of more than $640,000.

Prince Harry’s mother drew attention to the charity when she visited a minefield-clearing project in Angola in 1997. Prince Harry also reportedly contacted members of the Halo Trust working in Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Archewell supports causes that promote social justice, gender equality, and well-being for underprivileged communities
