If the Department for Transport can afford to spend £1.7bn on a tunnel just to obstruct the view of Stonehenge, then why not use the funds to address more pressing issues such as the poor state of Britain’s roads? Lavender believes the money could be better spent elsewhere, especially as there are already campaigners trying to prevent the tunnel’s construction, arguing it would cause lasting damage to the ancient site.

The Guardian recently published its top 20 Christmas carols ranked by music journalist Alex Petridis, and one reader, David Rose of Sutton Coldfield, agreed with the top two choices. He spoke about his enthusiasm for In The Bleak Midwinter, which he described as having the best words, while also expressing a preference for hearing choirs accompanied by an orchestra perform O Come, All Ye Faithful. Rose also revealed that he plays it loudly every morning during December.

The mayor of Oslo recently arrived in London and made comments about her desire to reduce the carbon footprint of the annual Christmas tree sent from Norway to Trafalgar Square. Tim Exton of Seattle responded to the article, making a wry comment that the first step to lowering the tree’s carbon footprint might be to not fly to London for the occasion at all.

A reader from Wirral, Merseyside, also wrote in to offer a suggestion regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the Parthenon marbles. Xanthe Brooke pointed out that both Liverpool and Edinburgh have copies of the marbles, and wondered if the King could donate towards making a copy for the British Museum. The issue of whether the marbles, taken from Greece by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century, should be returned to Greece or retained in the British Museum continues to be a subject of debate.
