A brand new book that chronicles first-hand accounts of the war in Ukraine from 170 Ukrainian DJs and producers has been published. ‘Ukrainian Field Notes’ is a fundraising compilation that compiles music and interviews from multiple Ukrainian artists over the course of the first year of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The project, curated by artist and filmmaker Gianmarco Del Re, promises to “present an overview of the changing face of the Ukrainian music scene dictated by blackouts and curfew restrictions.”
Originally beginning in 2022 as a series of interviews with Ukrainian musicians for “A Closer Listen,” an experimental music website, ‘Ukrainian Field Notes’ has now expanded into a 567-page “diary-style” book that includes photographs and interviews with artists exploring the effects of the war. It deals with “PTSD, displacement, separation, and loss” while showcasing the “strength and resilience” of Ukrainian artists.
Accompanying the book is a fundraising compilation that plays 86 tracks produced by Ukrainian DJs and producers, with all profits going toward Musicians Defend Ukraine. The tracklist runs in chronological order with the interviews featured in the book, with genres ranging from ambient to classical to electronic. The project aims to take a 360-degree look at how sound has shaped the war experience of Ukrainian artists from civilians’ perspective.
Del Re explains that by looking at the war’s sonic dimensions within a civilian context and studying the listening habits and music production on the frontline, the project aims to show how sound has shaped the war experience of Ukrainian artists. Fans can learn more about the book on Amazon or listen to ‘Ukrainian Field Notes VA’ on Bandcamp.
