The trust also said it is investigating why its central booking office did not send the automatic cancellation email.
Several visitors expressed their disappointment and frustration on Facebook, with one person saying it was a “birthday treat” for their mum who now had a “wasted journey”. The National Trust said that ticket holders’ disappointment was regrettable, and it is always striving to improve its communication to customers.
