The UK government has announced new measures to reduce migration and tighten the country’s borders. Home Secretary James Cleverly has proposed raising the pay threshold for skilled workers wishing to obtain visas to a minimum of £38,700, up from the current £26,200. Care workers will be affected by the new requirements and their dependents will be barred from entering the country from April 2024. The government is aiming to reduce immigration by 300,000.
The Daily Express reports that the Home Secretary has described the proposals as an attempt to put an end to visa abuse. Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph reports that the new policies are aimed at mollifying right-wing Conservative MPs who have expressed concern over record levels of migration. The Telegraph also reports on a dual national British-Israeli who was killed whilst fighting for the Israel Defense Forces.
The Daily Mail describes the new measures as the “biggest ever clampdown” on immigration, although it has warned the government that the proposals may face a lukewarm reception from the public if they are introduced after Brexit. The Times reports that the government’s plan to reduce the number of immigrants arriving in the UK by a quarter also includes a review of allowing foreign students to stay for two years following their courses and making it more difficult for foreign spouses to move to the UK.
The Guardian has reported that the UK’s nuclear site, Sellafield, has been hacked by cyber groups linked to Russia and China.
