LAVURN, the new alias of Cassius Select, also known as Lavurn Lee, has revealed his self-titled debut album with the first single “Mezzanine.” The music video for “Mezzanine” is made by LA-based digital artist 011668 and is released on DJ Plead and T.Morimoto’s Sumac label. The album marks Lee’s first release under his real name, which reflects the emotional and personal nature of the project.
While Lee is already an established figure in dance music under the alias Cassius Select, with his unique bass productions on renowned labels such as Unknown to the Unknown, Accidental Jnr, Hypercolour, and Banoffee Pies, Lavurn Lee has always preferred making “his type of pop music.” In 2018, Lee released an album under another pseudonym, Fake, expressing his displacement after spending seven years in Sydney, Toronto, and his feelings of disconnection from Toronto’s hip-hop scene.
LAVURN is a new direction for Lee’s music, as it reflects his personal experiences in life, and he admits that it sounds intimate because it was made in isolation. Although most of the lyrical content of the album focuses on the consequences of breakups, LAVURN is more about self-love and self-care. Music helped Lee heal from the emotional turmoil of a breakup, and he realized that making music is also a form of self-care.
LAVURN’s album is now available for pre-order. The album marked a major shift for Lee, who drew inspiration from his life to create an intimate, personal album that highlights the healing powers of making music
