A large explosion in Edinburgh has resulted in the destruction of a house and the rescue of two people. Emergency services received a call about the property in the Baberton area of the city at around 10:30 pm. Images captured from the scene show that the building was completely destroyed, with authorities advising people to avoid the area.
An eyewitness stated that the vicinity outside the house at Baberton Mains Avenue where the blast occurred was littered with debris and there was an overpowering smell of gas. Firefighters said two people had been rescued from the structure, and a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spoken person told BBC Scotland that two homes had been impacted.
Alison Broadhurst, who lives a street away from the scene of the explosion, said she was preparing for bed when there was a massive bang that rattled her house. She thought something had struck the roof of her house and, determined to determine what happened, she went into the street and discovered that the house had been blown up.
The police were not able to give further details about the explosion, with authorities unable to confirm if it had been a gas explosion. Emergency services are now at the scene, and people are urged to avoid the region as investigations continue
