New UK weather warnings for snow and ice as sporting events cancelled

The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning covering a large part of the UK due to snow and ice. Forecasters have warned that much of the Midlands, Yorkshire, and north and central Wales will be affected, with possible disruptions to roads and railways. Cumbria has also declared a major incident, with police urging residents not to travel unless necessary, particularly in the South Lakes and Millom area. People are advised to take caution as police are aware of multiple reports of vehicles stuck in traffic due to the heavy snowfall.

BBC Weather forecaster Stav Danaos has said that northern Scotland could see temperatures drop to as low as -11C overnight. Although the UK will start with a wintry mix in eastern England and south-east Scotland first thing on Sunday, temperatures will rise slightly during the day. However, wetter and windier weather is predicted to sweep across the UK by Monday after a break from the snow and ice.

Sporting events across the UK have been disrupted due to the inclement weather. The FA Cup tie between Alfreton Town and Walsall was dramatically called off, while Crewe Alexandra’s FA Cup tie against Bristol Rovers is also postponed. Additionally, Saturday’s high-profile racing fixture at Newcastle was cancelled due to snow on the track. Manchester United’s team flight to Newcastle was also called off due to the bad weather, and they had to make the journey by coach.

An amber cold-weather health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency remains in place for five regions in England. The entire health service might be affected if the weather continues, with the potential for the whole population to be at risk. The alert is in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber until the beginning of next week.

Heavy snow has also caused disruption across Europe, with Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic being hit by train and flight cancellations. The German weather service has predicted that 30-40cm of snow could fall by Saturday evening. People should take extra care when traveling, and only travel if necessary, due to the adverse weather conditions
