The UK is set to experience snow and frigid temperatures this Friday, with some areas expected to see lows of -10C. Parts of Scotland and eastern England have been issued with warnings for snow and ice through the weekend, with hilly areas experiencing the heaviest snowfall. The National Health Service has also issued an amber alert for Northern England, with all healthcare services at risk of being affected by the weather. The alert is in place until December 5th.
The overnight lows on Thursday were the coldest since March, with Cumbria experiencing temperatures as low as -9.4C. Major cities such as London, Manchester, and Edinburgh also recorded sub-zero temperatures. Much of England’s southeast and central regions were blanketed by freezing fog on Friday morning, with the Met Office issuing yellow warnings for snow and ice in most areas. As a result, travel disruptions are expected, especially on roads and railways.
The cold snap has already caused disruptions, with more than 30 schools in Cornwall closed due to hazardous conditions, and the police in County Durham warning drivers of snowy roads. On Friday, Northern Ireland and southwest England were relieved of their yellow warning for ice, but warnings remained in place for other regions.
The weekend is also expected to be chilly, with temperatures staying below zero through Saturday and into Sunday morning. Snow showers are predicted in North Sea coasts while other regions like Wales, the Midlands, and northern England are expected to see rain, sleet and snow showers.
