Children’s author and poet Michael Rosen, known for works such as “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” has shared insights into his life in an interview with Positive News. Rosen, who was in intensive care for 48 days with COVID-19, noted the deep breathing exercises he taught himself to do while recovering, which he described as helpful in relaxing, sleeping and thinking. He also shared he used writing as a means of distraction and problem-solving during tough times. Rosen also spoke about his love of acting and theatre and how it provides him a more immediate connection to his audience than writing.
Rosen mentioned how his parents instilled a passion for curiosity in him, and he spoke of his love of chickpeas and how they should be celebrated as the “Great God Chickpea” for all the delicious meals they contribute to. He also touched on his changing views on speaking out about issues, saying he keeps quiet as he doesn’t represent anyone. Rosen revealed his deep regret over not being more knowledgeable about meningococcal septicaemia when his son, Eddie, died from it years ago, wishing he’d known that the rash often only appears in the armpits and groin. Rosen has written to meningitis charities to make this warning clear so others can avoid a similar tragedy.
