UK government steps in to prevent MSG Sphere plans in London from being scrapped

The UK government has intervened to prevent the termination of plans for the proposed London-based MSG Sphere, according to reports from The Standard. Michael Gove, the Levelling-up Secretary, has called for a six-week halt to the Mayor’s decision to reject the development of the entertainment venue, mandated to be erected in Stratford, East London. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, had blocked the blueprint of the Las Vegas-style structure on the grounds that it would disturb residents and secondarily place added pressure on the infrastructure of the region. The concerned department has informed Khan not to disregard the planning proposal via letter to the London Legacy Development Corporation. The Secretary of State has instructed the Mayor to determine if actual fact supports Gove’s recommendation that he call for a review under the Town and Country Planning Act’s section 77. The letter adds, “The Secretary of State hereby prohibits Your Local Planning Authority from implementing the Mayor’s direction…to refuse permission.” Michael Gove is of the opinion that the entertainment development needs more investigation. Gautam Ranji, the venue’s CFO, is said to have resigned due to conflicts with the MSG CEO, reportedly yelling and screaming at him. The Sphere in Las Vegas is colloquially referred to as the “sun on earth” by locals, and its exterior illuminates the globe in an instant. The light pollution it causes, however, has become a severe cause for concern for residents close to the venue. The London counterpart would have posed a similar issue in that regard, according to locals
