A climate campaign group known as Just Stop Oil created chaos outside the London residence of Chancellor Rishi Sunak, prompting the Metropolitan Police to arrest 16 members of the group. The protesters, approximately 18 in number, reportedly created quite a ruckus by drumming on pots and pans and holding up placards. It has not been confirmed whether the Chancellor was inside his house at the time of the protest.
A statement released by Just Stop Oil referred to the demonstration as a ‘wide awake disruption’, insisting that its members were against Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to grant 100 new licences for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. The group’s demands and need to cause unrest resulted in four individuals being arrested on suspicion of public damage, and another one arrested for causing a public nuisance.
As the demonstrators scaled the house using ropes and ladders, the police swiftly took action and took the arrested individuals to various central London police stations, where they remain held in custody. However, No.10 Downing Street, the residence of the Prime Minister, has refused to comment on the incident.
Rishi Sunak is reportedly slated to visit the United Arab Emirates along with several other influential world leaders for the World Economic Forum’s Special Annual Meeting in May. It remains to be seen if the climate change campaign group is planning any further disruptions at other locations as part of its strategy
