The Dutch version of a controversial royal book titled Endgame has been removed from sale due to a translation error, according to its publishers Xander Uitgevers. The book has been highly critical of the Royal Family and includes an alleged name of a family member who inquired about the skin colour of Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby. The couple had not revealed the name of the member involved in the race row and in the English version of Endgame, two people were said to have been involved although the author, Omid Scobie, did not disclose who they were for legal reasons.
Scobie, who has been seen as having links with Prince Harry and Meghan, has denied his involvement with the addition of a name to the Dutch version of the book, stating he had never written a version including any names. He expressed his uncertainty of the situation, as he cannot speak Dutch and has not seen the copy. The book also presents unflattering portraits of several Royal Family members, including Prince William and Catherine and King Charles and Queen Camilla.
There has been confusion over the book’s launch in the Netherlands, with the publishers temporarily withdrawing the Dutch version. Though Xander Uitgevers has cited a translation error as the cause, there seems to be an additional line in the Dutch version that remains unclear how it was mistakenly added. The removal of the book has raised questions over its claims of racism row and has been met with mixed reviews. Buckingham Palace has declined to respond to the book’s claims or the removal of the Dutch edition, while Prince Harry and Meghan’s representatives have also not commented.
Despite the controversies surrounding Endgame, it remains a popular read worldwide. While the Dutch edition is expected to return to the shelves post-correction, the author, Scobie, has claimed that the Dutch text published in error was neither an early draft nor a previous version. Nevertheless, the publishers have plans to rectify the translation, and readers will have to wait to see if the corrected version of the book will change their perceptions of the Royal Family
