Juan Mendez, known by his stage name Silent Servant, has recently released his latest EP called ‘In Memoriam’. Comprised of a deeply personal memoir of his 30-year career spent in exploring and absorbing music’s shadowy side, the EP is a nod to people, places, and experiences of the past and their lasting effect on Mendez’s present. He has taken a contemporary approach to his production, which distills his memories while still keeping a reference to his past.
In an interview with Mixmag, Mendez talked about how he was able to take all his memories and influences and distill them into musical form for the very first time. He has expressed his love for Detroit techno, ranging from Model 500 & Cybotron, and has been inspired by different genres, including Wave EBM, dub techno, and classical minimalism.
Having been a member of the Sandwell District collective and its art director, Mendez collaborated on works that challenged the paradigm of minimal techno. These releases also helped shape the tracks on ‘In Memoriam’. Through the EP, Mendez displays his diversity and experience of the electronic music scene while taking a contemporary approach to his music.
The EP is available for download on the Tresor Berlin website. Mendez’s ‘In Memoriam’ EP is a unique blend of his love for Detroit techno and his exploration of the shadowy side of music. From his collaborations with the Sandwell District collective, he has gained experience and created a personal memoir, creating something that can still reference his memories while still being contemporary.
