Independent queer radio station Kunt Up Music.FM, or K.U.M FM, has announced that it will begin broadcasting in February 2024. The station will broadcast weekly from Thursday to Sunday with a range of shows and hosts. These shows include underground music, event shoutouts, and talk-shows that highlight events and opportunities available within the community.
According to a spokesperson for the station speaking with RA, K.U.M FM music will feature a variety of genres and formats from indie punk bands to hardcore dance DJs and collectives. Friday and Saturday evenings will focus on Bristol’s thriving nightlife scene, hosting genres like techno, house, hardcore, jungle, electro, UK garage, dubstep, drum and bass, ballroom, and disco. Beyond music-focussed shows, the radio station aims to produce shows that concentrate on discussion, debate, and promotion of topics including rights, policies and anything that is oppressing parts of the community.
To “bridge the gap” between the queer circle of Bristol and people outside, K.U.M FM aims to provide an insight into queer culture, ultimately improving the quality of life for queer people in Bristol and beyond. The station has advertised for several roles, including show proposals and radio volunteers with the options of working as production assistants, social media assistants, or promotion assistants.
K.U.M FM is a brave and much-needed step towards an inclusive and diverse radio scene, which will amplify underrepresented voices and break the barriers that have historically left queer communities under- and misrepresented in mainstream media. K.U.M FM is a refreshing change in the Bristol radio scene and is a move that should be celebrated and supported by all
