Several people, including three children, are in the hospital after a suspected stabbing incident in Dublin, according to Irish police. The incident occurred near one of the busiest streets in Dublin, O’Connell Street, on Parnell Square East on Monday at around 1:40 p.m. The Taoiseach, or Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, announced that police had detained a suspect and that the facts in this matter are still emerging.
A man, a woman, and three young children were injured in the attack, with a girl and a woman receiving treatment for serious injuries. The incident occurred near a school, Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire. An eyewitness, Siobhan Kearney, described seeing and assisting in stops the man with the knife. Kearney explained that the area has been sealed off and declared a crime scene.
An Garda Síochána (Irish police) has announced that it is following a definite line of inquiry and is not looking for any other person at this time. Meanwhile, Helen McEntee, the Irish Minister for Justice, expressed being “deeply shocked by the appalling attack” in a statement. Mary Lou McDonald, the leader of Sinn Féin and Dublin central TD, shared how the attack had sent “shock and horror throughout the community” and expressed sympathy to all those hurt by the incident.
The area around the scene has been cordoned off and declared a crime scene. Emergency services and police were on the scene within minutes, with ambulances arriving within three or four minutes. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing
