In a letter to The Guardian, Charles Osborne of Prague criticized Conservative MP Nadine Dorries for her condemnation of the “entitled elite” while simultaneously complaining that she had not been given a title. Osborne argues that this lack of self-awareness is a defining characteristic of many Tories, and suggests that Dorries takes heed of the proverb “don’t boil your cabbages twice” – an old Liverpool saying that means “don’t rehash the same old stories.”

Meanwhile, Adele Ryan from London wrote in to praise Adrian Chiles’s recent article that explores the complicated etiquette of Christmas family gatherings. Ryan faces the added difficulty of celebrating both her own birthday and her eldest daughter’s birthday on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, respectively. While Ryan has been happy to host Christmas for the last 33 years, she says she’s excited to switch things up and celebrate her big birthday next year at a pub.

In another letter, John Clarke from Wakefield suggested a new addition to the classic Christmas carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”: “778 lords a-leaping,” in reference to the recent recruitment of new members to the upper legislative chamber. Finally, Chris Sumner from Waltham Abbey, Essex, suggests that if a virtual Margaret Thatcher were to return to the government, a virtual Edward Heath – who was an expert in small boats – could be brought back as well.

Last but not least, Christine White from Bingham, Nottinghamshire, wrote in with a question about a photo in The Guardian that depicted Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt “screwing something.” White asks whether this is a metaphor, but does not provide any further context or explanation
