Banksy reveals his real name in unearthed 2003 interview

Banksy, the elusive artist known for his political and social commentary through graffiti, has revealed his real name in a newly unearthed interview from 2003. Speaking with BBC reporter Nigel Wrench, Banksy disclosed that his real name is Robbie. This marks the first time the artist has shared his real name with the public.

The interview was originally intended to be a bonus episode for BBC Radio 4’s The Banksy Story, but the episode was lost for two decades before being rediscovered by Wrench. In the interview, Banksy and Wrench speak about the opening of Banksy’s Turf War show in east London and defending vandalism as art.

The episode also features Banksy’s voice in one of his first known in-person interviews. When asked if his name is “Robert Banks”, the artist replies, “It’s Robbie.” The artist’s real name has been much speculated over the years with multiple variations of the name Robert, Robin, and Robbie.

Despite the revelation, Banksy’s true identity remains a mystery. Several individuals, including Massive Attack frontman Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja, have been rumored to be the artist behind the cloak with some evidence pointing towards a Bristolian man named Robin Gunningham. However, Banksy’s true identity remains unconfirmed.
