Jhonatan Andres, who was popularly known as DJ Fronter, passed away at the age of 32 due to a reported fentanyl overdose in the United States. The tech-house DJ, who was a leading figure in the South American tech-house scene, was deeply mourned by the electronic music community. Tributes were paid by artists such as Bondar, Blond:ish, and James Organ on DJ Fronter’s Instagram.
Andres was born on June 20, 1991, in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. He began producing music in 2008 and released music on over 50 international labels such as Toolroom, Mindshake Records, Stereo Productions, and 1605 Music Therapy. His music was characterized by its tribal, Latin percussion and was supported by leading electronic music producers, including Richie Hawtin, DJ Sneak, and Umek, amongst others.
DJ Fronter was due to perform in Mexico City this weekend alongside Paco Osuna. He has played at various international venues such as Club Space Miami, Amnesia Ibiza, Bali’s Red Ruby, and E1 earlier this year. Besides producing and DJing, Andres founded Orunmila Records, a digital label that promotes DJs and producers from his home country, Colombia, and Undercolors imprint with DJ Koleto.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. The drug is used to treat chronic and acute pain and is usually prescribed for cancer treatment or surgery. However, it is often mixed with heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine or used in counterfeit pills posing as xanax or oxycodone.
