Gaza protesters force Cardiff museum to shut front doors

Demonstrators chanting “Free Palestine” caused a Cardiff Museum to close its doors after entering the building. The National Museum Wales in the city centre was entered by protesters who displayed Palestinian flags. This occurred during a fifth weekend in a row of pro-Palestinian marches in Cardiff city centre regarding the Gaza war. The Museum apologised for any inconvenience and stated that the front doors were closed in order to ensure the safety of visitors and staff, with access allowed via the Reardon Smith Theatre. The doors were to be reopened as soon as possible.

The Gaza Strip has been a point of contention between Israel and Palestine, with the latest attack by Israel deemed a major military campaign in an attempt to destroy Hamas, considered a terrorist group. In response, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry advised that 11,400 people have been killed and the United Nations issued warnings about a “humanitarian disaster” following Israel’s counterattack.

During the Cardiff protest, demonstrators called for the liberation of Palestine. Several similar protests had already taken place leading to an increased concern from the Museum. Event organisers noted they were not responsible for the museum incident.

Nevertheless, it is vital that peaceful protests do not endanger innocent people or disrupt the operations of businesses and institutions
