A woman who recently suffered a miscarriage has spoken out after she received a phone call reminding her of an upcoming pregnancy scan. Emma Gooding described the call as “insensitive” and said it had taken a “huge mental toll”. The health board responsible has since apologised for the “careless” administrative error.
Emma shared her experience on social media and found that many other women across the UK had similar stories of insensitivity after suffering pregnancy loss. One woman received a letter from her GP practice asking her to book a six-week check-up after her baby was stillborn. Another received two phone calls from an NHS clinic to ask how things were going, while she was at the funeral for her stillborn baby.
Emma believes the phone call was just one example of a larger issue of a “lack of compassionate care” for women experiencing pregnancy loss. She also said that being in the same waiting room as pregnant women or those with newborn babies was particularly difficult during recovery.
The health board has said they are committed to improving bereavement and baby loss services to avoid similar situations occurring in the future. Emma hopes that her story can raise awareness of the need for better communication and care for women experiencing pregnancy loss
