A year after her disappearance during severe flooding in Aberdeenshire, a river search for Hazel Nairn is set to resume. Nairn, 71, disappeared in November 2020 while out walking her dog near the River Don at Monymusk. Members of Nairn’s family believe her body may still be along the river. An underwater search team examined the area in October and is expected to return. “We will never ever know what really happened but would ask the public to keep an eye out for any of her belongings,” Nairn’s daughter Anneka said.
The River Don stretches 31 miles from Nairn’s last known location before reaching the sea. Past searches have focused on bends in the river where Nairn’s body might be most likely to be trapped. The body of her dog was found in the days following her disappearance. Experts will look along the previously identified seven-mile stretch of water, beginning from the entry point.
Phil Jones, the leader of Beneath the Surface, a voluntary underwater search and recovery dive team in Lancashire, said the group’s primary goal was to provide families with closure. “Our main goal is to help families get answers and closure,” he said. “We don’t take any payment, we do it on our own time and expense.” Jones added that the search would be slow and methodical, especially where missing persons cases involving water were concerned. “We can never give guarantees at all in any missing persons case,” he stated.
Nairn’s disappearance was a “very sad weekend for us all,” said Anneka Gray, her daughter. “We will be paying the river a visit,” she added
