A new set of classes for music production and DJing have been launched by the Essex County Council. Dubbed “Count Me In”, the classes will be offered free of charge to 12 to 18-year-olds across the county. The initiative is funded by the Essex Year of Numbers programme, which aims to improve numeracy for children under the age of 18. Interested students can register for free weekly classes on the Essex Music Hub website.
The classes will be taught by DJ Shy Cookie, a professional music producer and DJ who has worked with award-winning garage duo DJ Luck & MC Neat. DJ Shy Cookie will teach students how to use DJ decks, create tracks, and provide industry knowledge to prospective DJs, producers, and label executives. The classes will take place at youth centres in Brentwood, Harlow, and Basildon.
“Working as a tutor as part of the Essex Music Service is a real privilege”, said DJ Shy Cookie. He added that the Essex Year of Numbers is offering these classes for free, providing young people the opportunity to develop their musical skills and discover their talents in a supportive environment. “If you’re dreaming of becoming a master DJ, come and join us, you never know where it might lead”, he said.
The “Count Me In” programme is part of the Essex Year of Numbers campaign. It will help students understand the relevance of basic maths in the music industry. Councillor Tony Ball welcomed the programme, saying that it’s an excellent opportunity for young people interested in the music industry to learn the art of music production and DJing free of charge in a fun and supportive environment
