Packaging created by Finnish startup Sulapac is leading the way in use of bio-based materials and low carbon footprint. Co-founders Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo and Suvi Haimi, biochemists, were inspired to act after noticing endless rows of plastic cosmetics pots.
In 2016, Sulapac was established using recycled and byproduct materials to make plant-based biopolymer and natural material packaging for beauty products. The product is sustainable and biodegrades in nature along a similar timeline to a tree leaf or piece of wood. The team now works with clients like Chanel, Shiseido and Schwan Cosmetics.
Plastic pollution and packaging waste continue to accumulate globally, but Sulapac has created a range of 13 different sustainable packaging options. Their breakthroughs include the 2017 Green Alley Award, for which it won a €25,000 grant.
Sulapac aims to democratize eco-friendly packaging and expand its beauty client base further. The company believes it’s critical to create products that not only tackle environmental problems but also attract customers for their functionality and aesthetics
