Lee “Scratch” Perry, a dub pioneer, has announced that his final album, ‘King Perry,’ will be released on the False Idols imprint in February 2024. This project is the third collaboration between reggae producer Daniel Boyle and the Jamaican composer, singer, and record producer. The duo previously collaborated on 2014’s Grammy-nominated ‘Back At The Controls’ and 2019’s ‘Black Album.’
‘King Perry’ marks Perry’s decision to make “something new, something different but still with a dub framework.” Among the artists featured alongside him and produced by Boyle are Greentea Peng, Shaun Ryder, Tricky, Marta, Rose Waite, and Fifi Rong. False Idols boss Tricky is also a co-producer of two tracks on the album, and the entire album was conceived, written, and recorded during the pandemic.
Boyle cites a wide range of influences for ‘King Perry,’ including synthwave, big beat, drum ‘n’ bass, and electronica. The final track of the album, ‘Goodbye,’ includes Perry’s last recorded vocal performance. Boyle shared that the track centers on Perry “musing about going back to being a baby and being reborn” and that “when the music stops, he just says ‘goodbye.'”
Lee “Scratch” Perry is an artist with a vast catalog of releases for Island Records, Trojan, Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound, Mad Professor’s Ariwa, and many others. Perry was highly influential in the ’70s, collaborating with Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Clash, Beastie Boys, Max Romeo, Junior Murvin, and The Orb, to name a few.
Perry’s final release, ‘King Perry,’ can be pre-ordered on the False Idols Bandcamp page. Fans of Perry’s innovative sound and passionate vocals can expect something new, different, and unforgettable from his final offering
