In an attempt to show their appreciation for clients and employees in a more meaningful and memorable way, companies are becoming more creative with their Christmas gift choices. While traditional gestures such as gift vouchers and Christmas food hampers remain popular, more values-led companies are opting for gifts with a positive, socially conscious message.
Wholegrain Digital, a sustainable website design agency, founded by Tom and Vineeta Greenwood, have been gifting subscriptions to Positive News for the past few years. Choosing to gift their employees with constructive journalistic inspiration in the form of Positive News magazine subscriptions instead of the traditional Christmas bonuses of chocolates or other treats, the couple revealed how personal such a gesture can be.
According to a survey conducted by employee rewards and payment platform, Edenred, over half of employees would prefer to receive a gift rather than a cash bonus at Christmas, with suggestions being made that gifts ought to reflect the company’s long-term objectives. Purpose-led businesses are now facing a tough decision: give their staff and clients a more sustainable present which won’t exacerbate consumer behaviour or continue down the traditional and commercial route.
Debbie Lovewell-Tuck, Editor of Employee Benefits, believes that such alt-gifting represents a wider shift, with company inclusivity a driving factor in this trend. For companies with a multicultural workforce, and/or with eco-friendly policies, the search for items that reflect these values are becoming increasingly important.
