Emma Hayes, the manager of Chelsea FC Women, has been named as the new head coach for the United States women’s national team. Although she will not take immediate control of the squad, Hayes will assume the position once the current Women’s Super League season comes to an end in May 2022. The announcement was made by Chelsea on the weekend, adding that she was leaving to pursue “a new opportunity outside the WSL and club football.”
The move to the U.S team will mean that Hayes returns to the country where she started her managerial career. She has managed Chelsea since 2012 and won 13 significant trophies in that time. As quoted by the BBC, Hayes stated that given her long-standing feelings for the U.S team and the country, this move was a “dream come true” for her.
Hayes will take up the mantle of the coach of the most successful women’s football team in history and aim to continue that success in the future. The US Soccer President Cindy Parlow lauded Hayes as a “fantastic leader” and a “world-class coach.” The formal handing over of the reins of the U.S squad will occur after the conclusion of the Women’s Champions League finals in late May 2022.
Hayes’ move to coach the USWNT will make her the highest-paid female coach in professional football. The length of her contract with the U.S team is unknown, but it’s believed it will tie her to the side for a minimum of two years. She will have just over two months to prepare herself for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris, where she leads U.S.W.N.T
