Capt Victor Cross, a Northampton leather merchant, played a key role in the arrest of Rudolf Höss, the former commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, who had gone on the run at the end of World War Two. Höss was a key figure culpable in the deaths of millions of Jewish people in the Holocaust, and his capture was significant in bringing one of the major war criminals to justice.
