Storm Debi: Warning over gale force winds and heavy rain

Storm Debi is set to hit parts of the UK with gale-force winds and heavy rain on Monday as the fourth named storm of the season. The storm is expected to reach Northern England and parts of North Wales with coastal areas potentially experiencing up to 80mph gusts. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for wind from 04:00 to 18:00 for several areas, while a warning for rain and wind is in place from 03:00 to 14:00 for parts of Northern Ireland.

There is a significant threat of danger to life from flying debris and large waves in addition to the possibility of flooding, travel disruption, and power cuts across many areas. The storm will develop over the Republic of Ireland before sweeping over the UK.

Jason Kelly, chief meteorologist with the Met Office, warned that Debi would “develop quickly and bring potentially very strong and damaging winds to parts of the Republic of Ireland”. While the strongest winds are expected to affect Irish regions primarily, the UK could still experience significant impacts. The “very strongest winds will have eased somewhat before reaching the UK, we are still expecting some significant impacts,” said Kelly.

The Met Office has also warned of the possibility of flooding in homes and businesses, with fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing a danger to life. Storm Debi is expected to move into the North Sea on Monday evening, following its path over the UK. It follows the destruction caused by Storm CiarĂ¡n across the Channel Islands and southern England
