The Turf, a pub made famous by its appearance in the Disney+ documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, recently reopened after a fire. Wayne Jones, the pub’s landlord, had initially stated on Twitter and Facebook that the establishment would remain closed until further notice after a blaze began in the boiler room. However, he later posted again to say the pub would be reopening imminently, somehow. The Turf’s marquee, which hosted visitors during the pandemic, was also broken into during the night, according to Jones.
The Turf has gained many international fans due to its feature in Welcome to Wrexham. The documentary series follows the fortunes of the Wrexham football team after its takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Since its appearance on the show, the pub has been visited by a number of Hollywood stars, including Reynolds, McElhenney, Paul Rudd, and Will Ferrell, on match days. The pub has a rich history, too, as the football club was founded in it over a century and a half ago by cricketers looking to stay active during the winter months.
Wrexham FC plays its home games at the Racecourse Ground, which is adjacent to The Turf, and Jones has said that the pub is typically “drunk dry” by enthusiastic spectators when the team is playing. Nonetheless, the pub has only had to close twice in the past 15 years, with the most recent occurrence happening when it was overwhelmed with people after Wrexham was able to clinch a long-awaited promotion. The Turf has been fortunate to avoid more serious incidents, but with so many supporters visiting on game days, the potential for problems is always present.
Despite the recent fire, Jones tweeted thanks to everyone who had offered their support and confirmed that the pub would somehow be able to trade. The Turf’s renewed availability is undoubtedly welcome news to fans of the pub, the team and the television show who are all rooting for the pub’s continued success
