Peckham Palais, a disused Victorian building in London, could potentially be transformed into a new nightclub pending a planning application from Southwark Council. The Neo-Renaissance building was constructed in 1867 and used to host electronic music events, as well as serving as a Jones & Higgins department store that operated up until over a decade ago. The venue is now at risk of demolition, having been dubbed as the UK’s most at-risk Victorian building back in 2021 by News Shopper, despite campaigns from local activists to have it recognised by Historic England. The building would require extensive repairs if it is to be restored.
The new club is proposed to feature multiple floors that serve various purposes, with the basement set to hold the nightclub itself, the ground level serving as a reception area, the first floor operating as a bar with food, the second floor as an event space, and the top floor used as an office and a studio. The club will also possibly host theatre performances, film screenings and dance events, among other interactive activities. The nightclub would only open until either 6 am or 5 am on weekends.
According to an architectural firm, the proposed nightclub would improve the area’s severe lack of live music venues. The Southwark Council Planning Committee is currently assessing the planning application. London The Inside and DJ Mag have both reported on this possible development, which could have a significant effect on the London clubbing scene.
