Bored Ape Yacht Club, a Hong Kong-based NFT company recently hosted Apefest, a festival that attracted NFT holders from across the globe. However, more than 20 attendees have since reported severe eye injuries following the event. The festival ended on November 5, and in the early hours of that morning, people started complaining of extreme eye pain.
Reports suggest that prolonged and unprotected exposure to UV lighting caused the injuries. Attendees reported waking up with severe pain and in some cases, without vision. Cryptocurrency analyst Adrian Zdunczyk, who was in attendance, explained that he was diagnosed with “photokeratitis over both eyes” following multiple visits to the eye clinic.
The event attracted more than 2,250 attendees, and Bored Ape Yacht Club issued a statement on November 6 stating that “less than 1% of those attending and working the event had these symptoms.” However, this has not stopped concern from growing around the issue. Apefest attendee Chloe Ge described the stage lights as “quite strong” and stated that after standing close to the stage when a rapper performed, at around 3 AM, her eyes felt like they were being burnt with spicy chili.
Bored Ape Yacht Club has reached out to individuals who experienced eye-related issues at the festival to investigate the potential root causes. While nearly everyone has reported an improvement in their symptoms, the company encourages anyone still experiencing eye issues to seek medical attention
