Strep A: Mother praises 'decisive' doctors who saved daughter's life

A mother has expressed gratitude towards the medical team who saved her daughter’s life from a severe strep group A infection. Sofia Brooks, then only 17 months old, was hospitalized in February at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Nikki Borkovic, her mother, is grateful for the swift medical intervention that saved her daughter’s life. Sofia has since recovered and was even able to participate in her parents’ summertime wedding.

Sofia’s parents first assumed she had a cold when she contracted the disease in February, but it soon became apparent that she was experiencing more severe symptoms. She was having difficulty walking, her temperature was increasing rapidly, and she was getting increasingly lethargic. Her mother Nikki felt something was off with her daughter’s illness and took her to the hospital.

Since Strep A symptoms can deteriorate significantly, Sofia was given intravenous antibiotics when she was assessed after arriving at the hospital. However, her condition continued to worsen. Her body swelled to the point of not being able to be conscious, and she developed rashes all over her body. She spent seven weeks in the hospital and underwent four operations on her infected hip joint.

The UK Health Security Agency reported that strep A infections are rare, and current levels are in line with what is typically observed this time of year. Scarlet Fever, which is most commonly found in young children, is a contagious illness caused by Group A streptococcal bacteria. If symptoms do not improve despite taking antibiotics, contact the NHS 111 hotline or visit your general practitioner
