Russell Brand, a British comedian and actor, has been accused of sexually assaulting an extra on the set of the movie Arthur in July 2010. The allegations were made in a civil lawsuit filed in the US by an anonymous woman referred to as Jane Doe. The woman claims that Brand exposed himself to her before following her into a bathroom where he sexually assaulted her. Brand has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit marks the first time any such accusations have been made in a lawsuit, although British police have said they are investigating a number of similar claims made against Brand. Warner Bros Pictures and other companies involved in the production of Arthur are also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
The woman alleges that Brand appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol before the assault on July 7, 2010. He then exposed himself in front of the cast and crew, the lawsuit claims. Later that same day, Brand entered the bathroom after the woman and assaulted her while a member of the production crew guarded the door from outside.
The woman is reported to be seeking unspecified damages from Brand. She suffers from extreme embarrassment, shame, and fear as a result of the alleged abuse, and also worries about being blacklisted in the industry since she still works as an actor. The case has been filed under the Adult Survivor’s Act, New York legislation that allows alleged victims of sexual offences for which the statute of limitations has passed to file civil suits for a one-year period between 24 November 2022 and 24 November 2023
