Festive planning can be a stressful time for many, but taking the time to plan ahead can reap benefits for the environment, small traders, and even our mental health. According to credit management company Lowel, as many as one in five people in the UK were still paying off Christmas debt in Easter this year. Spreading the cost over a longer period can help avoid this debt trap. Additionally, it can also avoid the last-minute pressure to overspend. Kathleen Mitchell, commercial director at John Lewis, revealed that a fifth of Britons now start planning for Christmas in November since it prolongs the timeframe for customers to spread the cost.

Planning further in advance enables shoppers to make more considered choices, which in turn means fewer returns and, consequentially, less harm to the environment. It’s estimated that customers in the UK return around £7bn worth of items bought online
