Brighton local DJ Fatboy Slim surprised fans with a set at The Prince Albert, a pub that is facing closure due to property developers. The pub was built in 1848 and has been operating as a pub since 1860. The developers plan on demolishing the garage next to the pub and replacing it with a four-storey building for commercial businesses, putting the historic pub at risk.
The pub launched a petition to fight against the closure, stating that there are many reasons why the development should not go ahead including planning and social issues. On October 30, Fatboy Slim performed a surprise set and shared his thoughts on the situation.
As a Brighton local, Fatboy Slim believes that The Prince Albert is an essential part of Brighton’s heritage. He stated, “Venues this size are the lifeblood of the music industry – every Coldplay started off playing in venues of this size. They are all suffering economically anyway, but they could do without having problems that they’re about to have with the forthcoming planning meeting.”
In response to Fatboy Slim’s show of support, The Prince Albert thanked him for his help. They shared a statement on Instagram saying, “Thank you so much Fatboy Slim for coming and blowing the roof off and supporting our cause. We can’t explain how much we appreciate EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU who has signed, shared and danced with us.”
The pub is working to fight against the closure and a committee meeting is being held today to determine its future
