A storm named Ciarán is set to hit parts of the UK, which will cause more rain and flooding in the coming days. Areas in Scotland, Wales, and England are already under flood warnings, and there are yellow rain warnings for parts of Northern Ireland. According to reports, the UK is at risk of flooding due to saturated ground conditions caused by the persistently wet weather. The public have been asked to be aware of the situation and to take care of themselves, especially when driving.
Storm Ciarán is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to southern England and Wales later this week, including gusts of up to 80 mph on England’s south coast and 50-60 mph in other areas. The heaviest rainfall, up to 40-60 mm, is predicted in southern and western regions. The Met Office has warned residents to be prepared for the possible impacts of the storm, such as flooding in areas that were already struggling to clean up from the heavy rainfall seen in the last week.
Meteorologist Marco Petagna stated that Tuesday will still be unsettled, but quieter, before heavy winds and longer spells of rain develop on Wednesday night into Thursday. Parts of the UK are already experiencing the effects of the storm. Over the weekend, a village in County Durham witnessed “several feet of water,” which led to the evacuation of homes and shops. In Hastings, East Sussex, a shopping centre was also evacuated after flood water ripped through one of its entrances. The UK is urged to be vigilant and take extra care in the coming days.
The Environment Agency is also advising that people avoid coastal paths and promenades and urges motorists not to drive through flood water. The agency highlighted that only 30cm of flowing water is enough to move a car and makes it more difficult for emergency services to navigate flooded areas safely
