Adam Johnson, a forward for the Nottingham Panthers, has died at the age of 29 after being involved in a serious incident in Saturday’s Challenge Cup match. During the game against Sheffield Steelers, Johnson sustained a severe cut to his neck from a skate, causing the game to be stopped in the 35th minute. He received treatment on the ice from paramedics, but tragically passed away. The club has expressed their devastation over the sudden loss of Johnson, describing him as an outstanding ice hockey player, a great team-mate, and an incredible person.
Johnson had previously played 13 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before joining the Nottingham Panthers, he played in Sweden’s Hockey League (SHL) and the American Hockey League for the Ontario Reign and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Johnson played for Germany’s Augsburger Panther before joining the Nottingham Panthers in August.
The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) confirmed that Sunday’s matches in the UK would be postponed out of respect for Johnson. Sheffield Steelers, Johnson’s former team, expressed their condolences to his family, partner, and team-mates. Sheffield Wednesday football club will also observe a minute’s silence before their Championship match against Rotherham on Sunday in honour of Johnson.
