A man who attempted to rescue a woman and her dog after they were swept into the sea from a jetty is now the subject of a coastguard search. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Burnham-on-Sea, with the woman managing to escape safely while the man remains in the water. Coastguard helicopter and rescue teams from Burnham and Weston-Super-Mare are leading the search effort, alongside RNLI lifeboats from Weston-Super-Mare, who are scanning up and down the Parrett and Brue rivers. Avon and Somerset Police and the ambulance service are also present at the scene.
As of yet, there is no news on the missing man’s whereabouts. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing, with the helicopter making use of heat-seeking equipment to scan the water. The man’s heroic actions to rescue another may have cost him his life, and the emergency services will continue their search until a conclusion is reached.
Instances of people being swept into the sea are, sadly, not uncommon, and individuals are advised to remain cautious when out near the coast.
