Hampshire, Dorset and Isle of Wight braced for flooding

Parts of the south coast have been issued with more flood warnings due to further heavy rainfall. The Environment Agency predicts that flooding will occur across areas of Hampshire, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight throughout the weekend. Ryde on the Isle of Wight will be particularly vulnerable, with flood defenses expected to be activated there on Saturday. East Cowes, Christchurch Harbour, and Hamble estuary were also identified as parts of risk.

The yellow Met Office weather warning for rain has been extended until Sunday evening, with many areas potentially seeing blustery winds with heavy showers around the coasts, according to Met Office forecasts. The Environment Agency has cautioned against driving through floodwater, adding that only 30cm (11.8 inches) of flowing water is enough to move a car. It has also warned people to stay away from coastal paths, piers, and promenades.

Residents in Ryde claimed the island was unprepared after the recent heavy rainfall. Phil Jordan, leader of Isle of Wight Council, has asked the Environment Agency to keep the flood defense gates in Ryde closed over the weekend. The agency originally informed him that the gates would remain open and the situation would be reviewed if the weather worsened. However, it has since confirmed that the decision had been made to put in the defense in Simeon Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Isle of Wight Council has set up two temporary information hubs to support the flooding-affected residents. Residents have been urged to wear gloves when handling sandbags as they could retain sewage and oils after coming into contact with floodwater. Any property flooding should be reported to the Environment Agency, and insurance companies should be contacted for advice
