The Beatles have announced the forthcoming release of their “last song” over 50 years since the band disbanded. Titled Now And Then, the song is based on a demo recording by John Lennon from the 1970s and was finished last year by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr. The track will debut on Thursday, 2 November, and will feature on newly-remastered versions of The Beatles’ Red and Blue albums available on 10 November.
Now And Then is an apologetic love song written by Lennon after the Beatles’ split. Addressed to an old friend, Lennon declares, “Now and then, I miss you / Now and then, I want you to return to me.” Though the Beatles tried unsuccessfully to record the song previously, advancements in audio technology finally allowed for its completion. McCartney teased the song earlier this year, revealing that AI technology was used to extract Lennon’s vocals from an old cassette.
The surviving members of the Beatles remarked on how surreal it was to complete the song, with Sir Paul noting that “There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear.” Sir Ringo added that “It was like John was there” during the recording of the track. Sir Paul wanted to finish the song since he received it on a cassette tape from Yoko Ono in the 1980s.
The band’s upcoming Red and Blue albums feature everything from Love Me Do to The Long And Winding Road across two volumes that respectively represent the band’s early years and later experimental period. The compilations were described by Rolling Stone magazine as “arguably the most influential greatest hits albums in history.
