Torrential rain brought by Storm Babet caused flooding in mid and north Wales that disrupted transport and led to evacuations from homes. Twelve flood warnings and 24 alerts were put in place, while many roads remained closed, particularly in Flintshire. There were also fears for communities along the Rivers Dee and Severn. Experts warned of the possibility that it could take a day before the rainwater from upper catchment areas reached the flood plains.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) acknowledged that the situation was beginning to improve, but it still had “concerns”. Ioan Williams of NRW advised people to exercise caution when travelling, following reports of some people being stranded in their vehicles. Meanwhile, further north, eastern parts of Scotland were put on another red “danger to life” weather alert in a week, with high winds and torrential rain forecast right across the UK.

The Met Office had issued a weather warning for Wales on Friday but lifted it early on Saturday morning. Transport for Wales explained that passengers need to check before travelling on the Wales and Borders networks. On Friday, customers with tickets for travel on that day were allowed to use them over the weekend. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received over 60 reports of flooding, with some homes being evacuated and schools forced to shut down.

Bronwen Hughes, the head teacher of Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold, stated that the school had to shut down due to the severity of Friday’s flooding. The Wrexham to Mold road, one of the main roads of the area, remained closed besides the A5 closed between Llangollen and Froncysyllte. The floods also affected different Denbighshire towns such as Prestatyn, Rhyl, and St Asaph, as well as Flintshire’s Mold
