The Institute of Cancer Research, London, revealed that blocking the signals prostate cancer uses to hijack white blood cells can resensitise advanced tumours to treatment, shrink them, or halt their growth. The team behind the study called it a ‘major scientific advance’ and said that the research provided a completely new path towards treating the disease.

Meanwhile, a large-scale, protected nature reserve was created in Somerset, bringing together 31 existing reserves, including two with national protected status, and an additional 400 hectares of new land. The reserve will be managed primarily for conservation, increasing the protection for our most precious sites and working to make them bigger, better, and more joined-up. Conservationists welcomed the move, but caution was advised due to recent concerns about England’s national parks not doing a great job of protecting nature.

In animal welfare news, Wales has led the way in outlawing snares and glue traps, sparing animals from painful deaths. Rural Affairs Minister Lesley Griffiths announced the ban, stating that the devices are ‘incompatible with what we want to achieve.’ Wales is the first nation in the UK to introduce such a ban, with the RSPCA Cymru praising the decision and calling it a huge step forward
