German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) has released a new documentary entitled “How Techno Shapes the Future,” exploring the evolution of techno music. The film examines the current state of the genre, asking the question, “Between underground, culture, and commerce – where is techno today?” Its chapters include “Taking Over Pop Music,” “Reclaiming the Narrative,” and “Pushing the Boundaries.”
The documentary follows the evolution of techno in Detroit, Frankfurt, and Berlin, featuring interviews with industry figures such as Stacey Hotwaxx Hale, Sven Väth, TAAHLIAH, and Tresor project manager Nicky Böhm. Böhm discusses the importance of more diversity and inclusion in the industry, while TAAHLIAH speaks about her own experiences with discrimination.
The film reflects on how techno has transitioned from an underground genre to a mainstream phenomenon, with modern DJs not only moving dance floors but also being successful entrepreneurs who must perform well both on stage and online. The film’s description reads, “Fetish-wear is now the dress code of a young generation of TikTok ravers who discovered techno on social media. DJs do not only move dance floors but are simultaneously entrepreneurs who need to perform just as well online, as they do on stage.”
This new episode is part of DW’s Arts Unveiled series and follows the release of “How Techno Was Born: From Detroit to Berlin.” The full documentary is available on YouTube
