Hartlepool man charged with murder by counter-terror police

Counter-terrorism police have charged a man with murder after a 70-year-old was killed in Hartlepool. Terrence Carney was discovered seriously injured on Tees Street on Sunday morning and died at the scene. Another man was found with non-life-threatening injuries half a mile away at a residence. Ahmed Alid, who lives on Wharton Terrace, has been charged with murder and attempted murder. The 44-year-old is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

An investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and Cleveland Police led to the man’s arrest. On Monday evening, Alid was officially charged following police inquiries. Detectives confirmed that officers were called to Wharton Terrace at around 5.17 am on Sunday after a man was discovered with injuries. Mr Carney was subsequently found seriously injured on Tees Street. Despite emergency services’ efforts to revive him, he died at the location.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, who is in charge of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, stated that the authorities are “pleased that this was an isolated event and don’t believe anyone else was involved in the incident.” He went on to thank the local community for their cooperation during the investigation. Deputy Chief Constable Victoria Fuller expressed her admiration for the attending officers’ valour, stating that “our thoughts go out to the family of Mr Carney and the second man involved in Sunday’s incident.”

The police have assured the public that this was an isolated case and that no one else is being pursued in connection with the killings. The authorities have expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support shown by the community in response to this occurrence
