Pro-Palestine protesters gathered in their thousands across several Scottish cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to condemn the Israeli government. The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) organised the protests that were part of a wider campaign of protests taking place across the UK including London and Manchester.

In Glasgow, the demonstrators started on Buchanan Street and marched to BBC Scotland headquarters at Pacific Quay. Meanwhile, the Scottish government has pledged a £500,000 aid package towards helping the UN establish a humanitarian corridor to aid innocent civilians caught up in the conflict. The international development minister, Christina McKelvie, confirmed the package has been extended to provide support to the displaced.

The protests come following the unprecedented attack launched by Hamas on Israel, with its militants attacking communities in the regions surrounding the Gaza Strip where many innocent civilians lost their lives. Fatalities that followed subsequent retaliatory attacks by Israel have now reportedly reached more than 2200 with over 8,700 injured.

In addition to the human cost, there is also significant economic adversity as a result of the ongoing conflict in the region, which is seeing a massive humanitarian response on the ground targeting economic recovery. While violent conflict continues, there is hope in these efforts to rebuild the region in a peaceful manner. The situation has prompted difficult conversations, such as those experienced by Debbie Taylor, whose elderly father lives near the Gaza border in Israel, who said the conflict was reminding him of the Second World War
