Emergency services are attending the scene of two incidents on the M1 in Leicestershire. The motorway has been closed in both directions. The northbound carriageway was closed between junction 21A at Kirby Muxloe and junction 22 at Coalville at approximately 13:00 BST due to a lorry fire. Shortly thereafter, the southbound side was also closed. There has subsequently been a collision between a lorry and a motorbike in the same area of the motorway.

There are no further details of any injuries or casualties. However an air ambulance has been called to the scene of the incident which is being extensively reported on social media.

Becky Dempsey took to Twitter to express her frustration at the incident stating that she had an infant in the car with her and “can’t move”. National Highways responded to her tweet saying “Unfortunately not. An air ambulance is now attending due to the severity of the incident.”

The incident is causing significant delays to traffic in the area. Traffic service Inrix has reported that the crush is preventing vehicles from using diversion routes leading towards the A46.

There has been no further information forthcoming from the relevant authorities concerning the duration of the closure or the availability of alternative routes available to the travelling public
