The highly publicised feud between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy will be documented in the upcoming Disney+ series Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story. In an emotional trailer for the series, Rooney talks in-depth about the libel case in which she accused Vardy of leaking stories about her to the press. Rooney is seen breaking down in tears while discussing the case, stating that she was constantly preoccupied with thoughts of the feud. She also reveals that her father noticed a change in her personality, telling her that she was “just not you any more”.
Rooney and Vardy’s feud began after Rooney planted fake stories on her Instagram account in 2019 in an attempt to catch whoever was leaking information about her to the press. After clamping down on her privacy settings, Rooney stated that the only account that viewed the stories before they were later published in The Sun was Vardy’s. The alleged breach of trust prompted a huge reaction on social media, securing the nickname “Wagatha Christie”.
The High Court concluded that Rooney’s accusation was “substantially true”, leading Vardy to lose the defamation case and be expected to pay an estimated £1.5m towards Rooney’s legal costs. Despite this, Vardy maintained her innocence throughout the trial. The upcoming Disney+ series will feature the first public statements on the case from Rooney’s husband Wayne and other members of her family.
