Essex Police have arrested an American fugitive suspected of rape in Chelmsford back in 2007. Nicholas Rossi, 36, was detained following a report last year in April. News emerged that last week, an extradition order was put in place, meaning Rossi can be sent back to the United States to face charges relating to the alleged incident. The American’s alleged crimes caught him on the most-wanted list in Utah.
Officials arrested Rossi after liaising with the appropriate authorities, who had been monitoring his movements for years. The American will remain in custody for questioning. It’s not yet known when he will be sent back to the US to face charges.
Essex police released a statement following the arrest: “After liaising with the appropriate authorities, Essex Police officers arrested the man on suspicion of rape this morning.”
Rossi’s arrest is a major breakthrough for the US authorities, who had been pursuing him for years. In addition to their ongoing investigation into the 2007 rape allegations, he will also be tried for failing to appear in court.
Furthermore, Rossi’s arrest highlights the ongoing cooperation between international and local authorities, with the former seeking to bring members of the most-wanted list to justice, wherever they may be hiding. The arrest was made due to the ongoing efforts of British and American authorities who share a commitment to extradite individuals wanted for trial in either country
