Israel-Gaza attacks: Yousaf makes contact with trapped in-laws

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s first minister, has expressed his concern for his parents-in-law who are currently stuck in Gaza due to Israeli attacks. The parents had travelled from Scotland to Gaza to care for a sick relative and were present during the recent Hamas attack on Israel. Mr Yousaf stated that his wife’s family is safe for now but the situation is far from ideal. He has even called for the immediate creation of a humanitarian corridor to allow civilians in and out of Gaza.

The family is reportedly very anxious as they can hear missiles and fighter jets throughout the day and night. They are currently trapped as they have been told to leave the region, but with no safe passage to the Rafah border and little access to supplies, they remain stranded. Even the medical supplies in the area are lacking, which is the reason why medical professionals are having to use items such as bits of their own clothing to treat the wounded.

Mr Yousaf has called for immediate action from the UK foreign secretary to push for a ceasefire in Israel and Gaza. He also urged UK officials to use their positive relationship with Israel to work on opening a humanitarian corridor in and out of Gaza to allow much-needed supplies to be brought in. This, according to Mr Yousaf, is the only way that innocent civilians could be saved.

The UK Foreign Office has revealed that it is in talks with Egypt about maintaining a land crossing from Gaza into Egypt. A spokesperson stated that Hamas is responsible for the current situation and has been bringing pain on the Palestinian people intentionally. They further stated that Israel has a right to protect itself from terrorist threats and that their response is proportionate
